A Country of Make-Believe Economics

Aklog Birara (Dr) - Part One

"What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead." - Nelson Mandela There is no single country in the world that was not poor and technologically backward. Equally, I know of no single country worthy its name that does not strive to overcome policy and structural obstacles to free itself from debilitating poverty, hunger and technological backwardness.

Looking backwards: the case of Eritreans and Ethiopians

Obo Arada Aba Shawl aka Wolde Tewolde
January 1, 2016

Why looking backwards instead of forward could benefit Ethiopians and Eritreans?

I was born somewhere between 1941 and 1943. This is the year when Fascist Italy was defeated in Eritrea as well as in Ethiopia. I was born on the 13th month of Paquemen - the beginning of September, in a village without a vowel. ZGB comprised not more than three hundred household. This village, we call it AADDI was the cornerstone for self-reliance in every aspect of the word. I mean geographically, politically and religiously. But I had to leave ZGB by the age of 5.

CONDEMN THE INTENSIFIED REPRESSION IN ETHIOPIA

Hundreds of peaceful protesters are behind bars and, as usual, torture is extensive. Political activists like Bekele Gerba and Yohanes Tesfaye, journalists like Getachew Shifferaw, students both male and female, and many, many more are jailed. More than 84 have been killed all over the country.

Are armed and non-violent struggles mutually exclusive in today’s Ethiopia?

By Assegid Habtewold

TPLF removed its sheep clothing
Many from the opposition camp figured early on the true nature of TPLF. They were skeptic about its willingness to democratize the country. In effect, they refrained from playing in a game whose rules are set by TPLF. On the contrary, thousands of Ethiopians joined opposition parties with high hope, and participated in elections from 1992 up until the infamous 2005 election.

One system, two countries: the case of Eritrea and Ethiopia

Obo Arada Aba Shawl aka Wolde Tewolde
December 25, 2015

Introduction

55 years have elapsed since the Eritrean Liberation began (1960-2015). That is, 55 years the Eritreans were under the yoke of colonial powers (1886-1941 or 1898-1941). The question is when was the Ethiopian colonialization started and ended. It did not end because it was not started, in the first place.

For over a century, the issue of Eritrea and Ethiopia was never addressed either in economic or in political terms.  Instead there were/are too much political slogans, secrecy and conspiracy. Even now, Eritreans label the Eritrean case as Issaias’s system, they call it NaY Issais Sir’aat! I don’t understand what it means.

CONDEMN THE BRUTAL KILINGS OF STUDENTS AND CIVILIANS

Recently the regime in Addis Abeba has killed close to 18 students  and civilians in Ambo,Ginchi,Balo, Western Wellega as overall peaceful protests multiply. Officially, the protests are against the regime's so called Master Plan to expand the size of Addis Abeba and thus appropriate more land from Ambo and other adjacent areas to the detriment of the local people, especially farmers.

The Uncommon Common Market -How the EPLF Plundered Ethiopia’s Wealth Part I

Worku Aberra

Most economists argue that a common market between two or more countries is mutually beneficial, but they also recognize that common markets create winners and losers in each country. To make everybody better off, economists suggest that the winners compensate the losers. In reality, such compensation rarely takes place: the winners enjoy the benefits
and the losers suffer the losses.

Dispatches: Yet Again, a Bloody Crackdown on Protesters in Ethiopia

IT IS TIME TO TALK ABOUT ETHIOPIAN and ERITREAN LEADERSHIP STYLE

By Obo Arada Aba Shawl
November 30, 2015

One of the few countries that have carried out a lasting successful Revolution is Ethiopia. It is called the Eway Ethiopian Revolution. It is comparable to the Bolshevik Russian Revolution, The Mao Zedong protracted Guerrilla Revolution and to the American Civil War Revolution. It was neither like the French Revolution of 1789 nor the Arab Spring contemporary Revolution. The Eway Ethiopian Revolution is the attempt to break the cycle of power heritage of the Ethiopian Monarchy, to modernize the bureaucratic government of the Habesha people and to defend the country of Eathiopia i.e. including Eritrea from all types of foreign domination also dubbed as Imperialism both of West and East.

The myth of the only alternative’

It is not uncommon to see the use of craftily coined catch phrases such as the one above to spin political messages in-order to shape public perception. The potency of such phrases is seen in their effectiveness to channel messages and be easily absorbed by target audience. They are also instrumental in diverting the focus of the public from the real and pressing issues. Often such catch phrases veil the real message of a grand political scheme. The title phrase above has been used/abused in our politics by similar anti Ethiopian forces to attain certain political objectives. The only alternative is not only encapsulates a certain political view but it hides truth.

It seems right to write about politics about Eritrea vs Ethiopia

By Obo Arada Aba Shawl
November 23, 2015

Introduction

Politics, in its simplest form, is about relationships. If there is no relationships, there is no politics. Governments involve in politics because communities desire to share hospital services, schools for their children, roads & communications for their daily lives and above all defense for their national security. For these reasons, nations appoint or elect public servants to run the people’s business by sharing costs in the appropriation of the NATIONAL BUDGET.

Famine is back in Ethiopia. Famine and Ethiopia have become so interchangeable western comedians don’t feel shame making famine jokes using us as a punch line. How is our first 21st Century famine being welcomed in our precious homeland? I am afraid our response has not changed. Denial, surprise, blame and righteous indignation have been brought out of the closet. The response by the Emperor, the Junta and the ethnically challenged mafia group are typical Ethiopian. ‘Shit happens but this time around it is not as bad as before so give us credit please!
