GAY BASHING TO DIVERT PEOPLE FROM REAL ISSUES
The regime in Addis Abeba has made its laws against gay persons even more stringent but unsatisfied by these measures it has now organized an anti-gay massive protest in Addis Abeba for April 26. The organizers are youth members of the ruling TPLF/EPRDF front, several ministries and the Orthodox Church whose hierarchy is now under State control.

Ethiopian immigration officials detained a member of staff from ARTICLE 19’s East Africa office on 3 April for 29 hours without any access to legal advice or consular support. Fortunately, Patrick Mutahi, a trainer in protection, reacted according to strict ARTICLE 19 security protocols, notifying Ethiopian contacts of his detainment before his mobile phone was confiscated. Following a rapid campaign for his release, Mutahi was deported back to Kenya on 4 April, and was warned that he would face jail if he returned. -

ETHIOPIAN REFUGEES IN TURMOIL IN THE SUDAN
Sudanese police and security personnel are conducting massive house searches in Khartoum and other cities of the Sudan. The search is aimed at Ethiopians who are alleged to have no new IDs and are going to be deported en masse to the clutches of the regime in Addis Abeba. It is to be noted that Sudanese officials are in league with the cadres of the Addis Abeba regime in the human trafficking especially targeting Ethiopian girls as young as fourteen years old.

Despite its praiseworthy goals, the World Bank's activities and undue influence over policy making in developing countries have come under heavy criticism over the years. Countless protests have denounced the Bank's neoliberal agenda, which includes unfair conditionality policies, austerity measures that deny people's right to healthcare or education, support for environmentally destructive projects, and sham debt relief.

KUWAIT VOWS TO VIOLATE HUMAN RIGHTS OF ETHIOPIAN WOMEN
FOLLOWING the killing of a Kuwaiti girl from a wealthy family by an Ethiopian maid, Kuwaiti lawmakers have in their majority called not only for the execution of the maid but for the deportation of thousands of maids and the banning of any maids from Ethiopia in the future. The lawmakers of Kuwait underlined their decision with racist references to alleged tendency to be violent by the Ethiopians.

Sirak Nebiyou,an Ethiopian journalist, who had focusd on the exposition of the plight of Ethiopians, refugees and asylum seekers in Saudi Arabia, has been arrested by the Saudi authorities following the demand by the EPRDF/TPLF embassy for his arrest. The fate of Nebiyou is worrying and there should be a concerted call for his immediate release.

We Ethiopians have a unique love/hate relationship with one another. We enjoy haggling over layers of ideas from the trivial to the momentous and vital. And yet with the exception of some upstarts we have inherited a rather nuanced cordiality from our ancestors and have perfected a dance around the fires of discord without seemingly offending each. This often occurs when we are in face to face conversational mode. However, this respectful distance grows thin and often disappears completely in our written communications under the cover of anonymity for which the internet is a perfect vehicle. A perennial complaint that crops up in our community from time to time is the deplorable quality and the deceptive camouflage that certain members of our society use the web in order to sell sordid and toxic ideas to the gullible.

It has been said that solutions proposed by governments are often worse than the problems themselves and we can realize this when we consider many weird and strange laws decreed out of the blue to deal with problems that are sometimes only seen within the presidential palaces and the offices and villas of the officials. Uganda has given us one strange (and irrelevant) law after another and it has amused us to no end. Museveni’s “scientific” tirade against homosexuality and his recent stringent decree against it actually concerns a minority in a country whose majority consider poverty, bad governance and corruption (by Museveni and his family) as their major problems. He went on to ban miniskirts too. Go ahead and laugh.

I came across a clip of a VOA interview from Ethiopia. It is about the unveiling of a new statue in Oromia Kilil (Bantustan), Arsi Zone, Hitosa Wereda named Anole Statue and Museum. From the video that came with the report the ugly contraption seems to be sitting in the middle of acacia forest and depicts a cut off human hand with a cut off what we are told to be depiction of a female breast resting on the palm stretched to the sky. I am assuming the Museum is there to explain the reason for the erection of such a strong and ugly visual in such a serene place.
