The philosopher discusses the momentous changes taking place in the global financial and political system.

From the Middle East to the streets of London and cities across the US there is a discontent with the status quo. Whether it is with the iron grip of entrenched governments or the widening economic divide between the rich and those struggling to get by. But where are those so hungry for change heading? How profound is their long-term vision to transform society?

Slovenian-born philosopher Slavoj Zizek, whose critical examination of both capitalism and socialism has made him an internationally recognised intellectual, speaks to Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman about the momentous changes taking place in the global financial and political system.

Winnipegger Ali Saeed uses art and song to bring awareness to plight of political prisoners

"Art and culture are so important. Whenever I have pain inside, when I'm disappointed, and I write a poem or sing a song, it's a kind of relief, it's a kind of painkiller. When I'm driving and I'm sad about something, I get a nice singing voice and I start singing."

Ali Saeed is lucky to be alive. After surviving torture in 11 different prisons in Ethiopia and Somalia, Saeed is happily living in Winnipeg. Music helped Saeed through his years as a prisoner. And his music and his poetry now help others as he continues the fight for political prisoners.

The New Scramble for Africa

by CONN HALLINAN

Is current U.S. foreign policy in Africa following a blueprint drawn up almost eight years ago by the rightwing Heritage Foundation, one of the most conservative think tanks in the world? New research accuses the World Bank Group's policies of facilitating land grabs in Africa and favouring the interests of financial markets over food security and environmental protection.

Agriculture and the food crisis are a high-profile agenda topic at the upcoming World Bank annual meetings, and critical voices are growing on the Bank's approach to food price volatility (see Update 77, 76). Recent in-depth research by the US-based Oakland Institute raises further difficult questions on agriculture policy for Bank officials.
